OTT streaming has exploded – now it’s time to monetise!
|
Over the last couple of years, the OTT streaming market has exploded. In 2020, Netflix added over
37
million new paid subscribers. Disney+ now has more than 118 million global paid subscribers.
The post-pandemic outlook for OTT streaming is very optimistic. Digital
TV Research found that
global subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) numbers will increase by 491 million between 2021 and
2026 to 1.64 billion. OTT revenues across the globe are estimated to reach $210 billion by 2026.
Now that the foundation behind connected media is mostly complete, the industry has its sights set
on the next important step: monetisation
Show me the money!
Given the rapid growth that SVOD services have seen during the pandemic, service providers are
shifting their attention from building streaming infrastructure to maintaining subscribers,
increasing satisfaction and expanding their revenue streams.
While a significant amount of revenue is up for grabs in the streaming industry, there are also a
vast number of streaming services to choose from. To succeed, you need to do more than just
provide an expansive VOD library and fresh new content.
You need to push the envelope of innovation and dazzle subscribers. How do you do that?
By offering advanced features like live, low-latency streaming. Reducing the lag time between live
broadcasts and live streaming services is opening up new business models, such as online gambling.
This is especially relevant for your subscribers who follow sports in real time. According to
Verified Market Research, the global market for online live video streaming of sports is projected
to reach $87 billion by 2028.
By providing curated content, including targeted ads and optimised content recommendations. The
targeted ad market is rife with opportunity. eMarketer predicts that OTT ad spend will hit $14.6
billion by 2023.
By exploring new business models, such as AVOD, you can generate sustainable revenue for streaming
services. Ad-supported VOD and free ad-supported streaming television are projected to grow by
144% to a combined $66 billion in revenue through 2026, according to Digital TV Research. About
two-thirds (67%) of consumers said they would choose an ad-supported streaming service such as
Pluto TV over a paid, ad-free subscription service, making this a key trend to watch.
