Piracy is hitting video streaming providers hard…but they are fighting back

Neil Nixon Brought to you by:

During the COVID-19 global health crisis, video piracy rose alarmingly. In the last seven days of March 2020, there was a 43% spike in Americans visiting piracy movie sites compared with the last seven days of February 2020.

Piracy is now a billion-dollar industry in the US, according to a recent report from Digital Citizens Alliance and NAGRA. Globally, it’s an even more substantial issue. To put things in perspective, the average streaming provider loses 20% in potential revenue to piracy.

The impact of piracy extends beyond just the revenues of service providers. Video piracy also impacts consumers by compromising the devices being used to view pirated content. About one in every three pirate sites infects users with malware or other harmful code.

Putting an end to piracy

With video piracy worsening and revenues being lost, the industry is stepping up its game to impede the efforts of pirates. Last year, Modbro, the world’s largest pirate video streaming app with more than 100 million users, was shut down. The Spanish National Police blocked 20 web domains and servers and arrested four individuals. Investigators estimated that the overall illegal profits from Modbro had reached more than 5 million euros.

The US government recently passed a new law that makes large-scale streaming piracy operations subject to felony prosecution to help reduce video piracy. In addition, a group of more than 70 Chinese film and TV makers last year called on short video platforms to remove content being used without authorisation, or legal actions would be taken.

The streaming industry is embracing advanced solutions to fight against piracy, including more restrictive DRM and encryption. Techniques such as watermarking and fingerprinting also play an important role in protecting digital media content.

CM|IP debate will shine a spotlight on piracy challenges and solutions at NAB Show 2022

By some estimates, the annual cost of content piracy to the media industry will hit $52 billion by 2023. Even as video delivery moves increasingly to the Internet, content piracy is still a major problem with a detrimental impact on artists, studios and, ultimately, consumers through offset costs.

At NAB Show 2022, Connected Media|IP (CM|IP) will host a panel debate on piracy, looking at the role of anti-piracy measures and content security best practices. The debate – ‘The battle continues – reducing content piracy in the Internet era’ – takes place on Sunday 24 April from 16.20-17.00 in the CM|IP Debate Theatre.

This CM|IP panel will bring together experts from across content security to look at the current state of the market and examine the emerging trends that content owners and operators need to consider. It will also look at the legal and technological avenues that can protect IP and examine the role that the wider industry can play in making content available for monetisation.

During NAB Show 2022, you can also check out technology demonstrations of the latest anti-piracy solutions on the CM|IP show floor.
