CM|IP Comment: Live news is evolving thanks to innovations in IP, Cloud and 5G
|
The news cycle never stops. Today, there is an endless flow of news covering a wide spectrum of digital media. Yet, live video still remains one of the most powerful methods for reporting on what is happening in the world. With a live video stream, service providers can reach a global audience of 7 billion people on any screen.
At-home news consumption grew significantly in the second quarter of 2020, as people spent more time at home during the COVID-19 global health crisis. Nielsen found that news was the most popular TV genre viewed during this time, with 47% of those surveyed having either watched or streamed the news.
As live news consumption continues to remain a popular source of information for consumers, several key market and technology trends have emerged and are set to impact the future delivery of live news.
Trends in live news delivery
The majority of live news content used to be delivered via satellite networks. But in today’s Internet age, we’re seeing a shift in live video delivery approaches.
-
Newsgathering and reporting have become democratised through platforms such as YouTube and Facebook. Anyone with a smartphone can stream live news. However, attaining high production value content equivalent to the type of content delivered by CNN or the BBC is still a significant delivery challenge.
-
ENG is has undergone a major evolution that increasingly melds satellite, cellular, wireless, IP networks, cloud, and SaaS within innovative new workflows. IP and cloud workflows are increasingly being adopted by service providers to bring simplicity, flexibility and cost savings to the live news delivery cycle. Through IP and the cloud, service providers can deliver live video coverage from any remote location in the world at a fraction of the cost of satellite.
-
Streaming quality for live news must be exceptional. Today’s viewers expect the same high quality for live streaming as traditional broadcast. And while broadband adoption has hit over 70% for most developed countries, delivering a buffer-free live video experience is challenging. IP delivery is more complex than broadcast TV, and it will be interesting to see how operators navigate these challenges and utilise new and efficient solutions for live video distribution.
-
5G deployments are heating up and will greatly impact live newsgathering. 5G offers a huge swath of bandwidth, making it possible to deliver superior video quality, with improved reliability and lower latency for live news. Delivering multiple live camera views is just one of the innovations we’ve already seen that can be achieved with 5G.
