CM|IP Comment: Video piracy in the spotlight at NAB Show 2021 as illegal practices soar during the pandemic
|
Since the start of the COVID-19 global health crisis, OTT video streaming has exploded.
Global viewing of video streaming services grew by 36% in Q1 2021, year over year, with South America, Europe and Africa seeing triple-digit growth and more established streaming markets such as North America and Asia seeing moderate growth, according to Conviva.
During this era of excessive streaming, piracy has also risen dramatically. OpSec found that 29% of video pirates increased the frequency in which they illegally downloaded content while under lockdown restrictions. Between February and March, there were nearly 1 billion visits to piracy sites in the US, a 60% increase from the beginning of the year, per analytics firm MUSO .
The impact of piracy is far-reaching
Film and live sports are highly targeted for illegal streaming, and the impact can be devastating. For example, pirates streaming live sports in Europe cost legitimate providers an estimated 941 million euros ($1.1 billion) over the last year.
It’s not just the economy that suffers when video piracy soars. Piracy has a trickle-down effect that also impacts jobs. It has been reported that between 230,000 and 560,000 jobs are lost due to digital video piracy in the US every year. Piracy directly affects actors, film producers, content creators, and even athletes, in terms of lost revenues.
Video piracy also impacts consumers with regards to compromising the devices receiving pirated content. And about one of every three pirate sites infects users with malware or other harmful code.
CM|IP @ NAB Show will explore the solutions
While piracy has been a pervasive issue in the video industry for years, it has become progressively worse. Recently, the US government passed a new law that makes large-scale streaming piracy operations subject to felony prosecution. That will help to impede video piracy to some extent.
At NAB Show 2021 – 10-13 October in Las Vegas – Connected Media|IP (CM|IP) will explore the latest piracy trends and detail the solutions designed to address this significant industry challenge.
New techniques are constantly being developed to protect content and revenue streams, including watermarking and fingerprinting. The role of anti-piracy measures and content security best practices will be discussed in length within our CM|IP theatres and demonstrated on the show floor.
The debate is on
At NAB Show 2021, CM|IP will host a panel debate on piracy, bringing together experts from across content security to look at the current state of the market and examine the emerging trends that content owners and operators need to consider. We will also look at the legal and technological avenues that can protect IP and examine the role that the wider industry can play in making content available for monetisation.
